The Independence Movement in Sydney celebrated the 27^th commemoration of President Moawad and his companions’ martyrdom with a Mass held at Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Harris Park. The requiem was led by Father Wakim Noujaim, who was assisted by a number of priests from Our Lady of Lebanon and Saint Charbel.

The participants in the liturgy included the Lebanese Consul General in Sydney George Bitar Ghanem, the Independence Movement coordinator in Australia Assad Barakat, the Movement’s coordinator in Sydney Said Doueihy, the head of the Sydney Kataeb party Peter Maroun, the head of the Sydney ‘Lebanese Forces’ Jihad Dagher, the coordinator of the ‘National Liberal Party’  Tony Nakad, the coordinator of the ‘Free Patriotic Movement’ Tony Tawk, the coordinator of the ‘Marada’ Fadi Mello, the representative of the ‘Future Movement’ Moussa Mahfoud, the head of the Maronite Council Tony Khattar, the vice president of the Maronite League to Lichaa Chidiac, the head of the ‘Lebanese Hero Youssef Beik Karam Association’ Joseph Makari, in addition to personalities from the Lebanese community, members of the Independence Movement, partisans and a large number of members from the Moawad family in Sydney.

In his sermon, Father Noujaim highlighted the path of the martyr President and he said: “President Moawad’s name has become linked with Lebanon’s Independence Day, being the date of his martyrdom. He has become forever part of the national memory, as his goal was to serve his country and his countrymen along and to work for nationwide social development.”

After the Mass, the Movement invited all those present to the church’s reception wing.
