Head of Independence Movement says government should confront all forms of terrorism.

Head of Independence Movement Michel Moawad said Tuesday March 14 parties should unite to confront upcoming challenges despite differences over the Cabinet policy statement.

“Despite differences within the March 14 coalition, the only way to confront future challenges and preserve Lebanon’s state institutions and democratic system is by strengthening the partnership between Muslims and Christians based on a message of moderation,” Moawad said.

Following a meeting with Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq, Moawad said the government should agree on a comprehensive plan to confront all forms of terrorism across Lebanon.

“Terrorism cannot be classified into two categories: a legitimate form of terrorism and an illegitimate one. For that reason, no political cover should be provided to any form of terrorism in any region in Lebanon,” he added.

According to Moawad, political assassinations and suicide bombings against civilians are both considered terrorist acts.

“In Tripoli’s case, security forces should implement the arrest warrant against Ali Eid and crack down on perpetrators in both Bab el Tebaneh and Jabal Mohsen. Likewise, security forces should crack down on terrorists in Arsal as well as Brital. We won’t accept any form of terrorism by any group whether Sunni, Shiite or Christian.”

The president, the prime minister and the Lebanese army should all assume their duties in confronting terrorism, Moawad said.
