Head of the Independence Movement Michel Moawad condemned Sunday the twin suicide attack that rocked Tripoli’s neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen, urging parties across the political spectrum to engage in dialogue to save Lebanon from plunging into chaos.
“I strongly condemn the twin suicide attack that targeted the Jabal Mohsen neighborhood in Tripoli and offer my sincere condolences to the families of martyrs and wish quick recovery to those injured,” Moawad said in a statement.
Moawad warned that the suicide attacks indicated the spillover of the Syrian conflict into Lebanon, which has fueled sectarian tensions and hatred among the Lebanese.
“What is most dangerous about these bombings is that they were carried out by two young men from Tripoli city, indicating rising sectarian tensions among the Lebanese,” Moawad said.
“Thus, I urge all those involved in the Syrian conflict to end their military engagement in Syria and to return to Lebanon in order to pave the way for a true reconciliation among all Lebanese factions,” the statement concluded.
