The president of the Independence Movement Michel Moawad visited the President of the Republic Michel Aoun at the Baabda Palace and discussed with him the current situation in the country and recent political developments.
After the meeting, Moawad said: “Today’s meeting with the President focused on general public matters, in particular the legislative law, at this determining period of Lebanon’s history. In fact, the three “NO”s recently raised by the President constitute the basic rights for each Lebanese citizen.”
Moawad added: “The extension to the Parliament’s mandate is an unconstitutional usurpation of Power, and the vacuum in Power is a destruction of the institutions. The President has indicated that there is no vacuum in the Constitution.”
He also said: “If we go back to the 1960 Law we harm the balanced political participation which is a guarantee to the real common life in Lebanon. This balanced participation cannot take place without the application of the same criteria on all the Lebanese constituents, until the Regime evolves and a Senate (مجلس الشيوخ) is created to be the body protecting the National Pact’s principles. Today it is the Parliament that protects the National Pact whose principles can’t be applied on one party and not another.”
Moawad pointed out that based on that, “the goal of the Legislative Law is to preserve the National Pact principles and democracy. The extension of the Parliament’s mandate is not acceptable, neither is the vacuum, nor the 1960 Law which harms the political participation. And what is not acceptable above all is threatening the Lebanese with the vacuum in the Legislative institution to try to subdue them and force them to accept the extension or the 1960 Law.”
